Mr. James Lee Humphrey

James Lee Humphrey, 85, went to be with his savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday May 10, 2023. Jim passed away at home with his loving family at his side after a courageous battle with dementia. He was born in Evansville, Indiana on January 29, 1938 to John William Humphrey and Armenta Helen Barr Humphrey. His family later moved to Detroit, Michigan. Jim graduated from Wilber Wright High School. He enlisted in the US Navy and played basketball for the Goshawaks . He received an athletic scholarship from the University of Southern Mississippi and played basketball for the Golden Eagles. He met his bride, Patricia Altmyer at Southern Miss and they married December 22, 1962 in Mobile, Alabama. Jim continued his education in Detroit, Michigan and received his Bachelors from Wayne State University in Police Administration and Masters from the University of Detroit in Public Administration. Jim had a successful career in the Detroit Police Department and proudly served 23 years retiring as Commander. His early days of police work included; walking a beat downtown, the 1967 riots, student safety patrol program, local news traffic updates. Later in his career, he developed the Crime Prevention Program which initiated Neighborhood Watch groups throughout the city of Detroit. The program received much recognition in the States and abroad. Jim was invited to Scotland Yard to introduce Crime Prevention. After retiring he went on to work for Michigan Bell Corporate Security and AT&T Director of Security Chicago. Beginning in fourth grade, Jim spent most of his time at the Boys and Girls Club. As an adult, Jim was a supporter, community leader and advocate of the Detroit Boys and Girls Club. Jim was also a key member Downtown Business Chamber of Commerce Detroit. Jim was an avid athlete and played in many softball leagues over the years and later in life took up golf and was proud to have two hole in ones. Jim was a Christian man of great faith. As an ordained lay minister, he preached many Sunday sermons, officiated weddings and funerals. He led Bible studies and often prayed with his co- workers, family and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his father, John William Humphrey. His mother, Armenta Barr Humphrey, and his son, Michael Holten. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Humphrey, his children, Deborah Shuff (Chris), James William Humphrey, Stacy Humphrey, Michelle Moran (Brent). Grandchildren, Corinne (Jake), Devon (Sydney), Estelle, Harrison, Sophia, Tyler and James Joseph. Great grandchildren Reece, Cassie, Josie and Theodore. And his Sister, Shirley Jean Schank. Memorial service will be held at the Gulf Shores Methodist Church on May 19, 2023 at 11 am.
