Mr. Carl Ernest Breckner

Mr. Carl Ernest Breckner, age 90, born January 5, 1929 in Foley, Alabama passed on January 7, 2019. His younger years were spent in Foley, AL where he graduated from Foley High School. Carl began his career with the Federal Service in the Merchant Marines in 1948. He then served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea from 1951 to 1953. After Korea, Carl attended Auburn University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1956, and upon graduation joined the Soil Conservation Service of Alabama. Carl found his true calling in May of 1957 when he joined Plant Protection & Quarantine with the USDA where he was employed for 33+ years. He was stationed throughout the years back and forth between Miami, Winter Haven, Puerto Rico and around the Caribbean. Around 1972 he was sent to Viet Nam as a Military Advisor with the USDA. After retirement in 1987 he returned to his farm in Foley until the present. Upon his return to Foley he farmed cattle and managed the pecan orchard. He always had a passion for making wine, distilled spirits, sauerkraut and building muzzleloaders. After his retirement, he was finally able to enjoy these hobbies the last 30+ years. Carl was a devoted, lifelong member and usher of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Foley, AL. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest Otto and Hilda Rose Breckner; and his daughter, Lisa Breckner-Wood. He is survived by his son Robert Carl Breckner (Rachel) of Gulf Shores, AL; wife Melanie Breckner of Foley, AL; sister Clara Heilmeier Harris of Foley, AL; stepchildren Jay Sikes and Catherine Sikes Rowell; nephew Terry (Pam) of Foley, AL; nephew Johnny Heilmeier (Babette) of Summerdale, AL; niece Susie King (Teddy) of Foley, AL; niece Jacque Mixon (Walter) of Magnolia Springs, AL; niece Karen Mann (Bill) of Mobile, AL; niece Karen Brais of East Waterboro, ME; niece Connie Brais of Pensacola, FL; and many great-nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews; as well as numerous other loving family members and friends. Carl will be remembered as a hardworking, loving, caring, strong and endearing father, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, husband, friend, father-in-law, great-uncle and great, great-uncle. A service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Foley) on January 11, 2019, at 1:30pm, followed by a Celebration of Carl’s Life at American Legion Post 99 (Foley) around 3:00pm. Carl requested to be cremated and his ashes spread with his beloved daughter, Lisa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Baldwin Education Foundation (Foley, AL) with a memo of “Lisa Breckner-Wood Memorial Scholarship”.
