Thomas Smith “Boogie” Dabney, II, an active member of the film and production community, theatrical performer, and long-time sailor, died unexpectedly on March 12, 2019 in a motorcycle accident at the age of 37 in Mobile, AL. Boogie is survived by his mother, Jan S. Dabney, and siblings, Stephanie Dabney Odom (Scott), David M. Dabney (Caroline), Leslie Dabney Lundberg (Jeremy), two nephews, one niece, aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Smith Dabney and grandparents, David F. and Lucy Dabney; Murry E. and Hazie Short. Born in Mobile, AL on July 30, 1981, Boogie attended Mobile Christian School. His interests ranged from various sports including sailing, football, basketball, track & field (1999 AISA State Championship MVP) to a love for the arts and theatre acting. He gained an early appreciation for the arts and theatre while visiting his Great Aunt “Dot” in Covington, LA, where she was a prominent member of the theatre community around New Orleans. His love for the theatre grew as he was cast as lead actor in the Junior/Senior plays at MCS during his high school years. Growing up in his parents sail loft, he naturally participated in competitive sailing at Gulf Coast yacht clubs as well as throughout the country. Boogie later attended the College of Charleston where he earned a degree in Theatre focusing on set design, production and construction. During his time living in Charleston, he was active as both an actor and production designer at numerous local theaters. He also sailed for the CofC Sailing Team and was one of the most well-rounded team members competing as both a skipper and crew at the highest level. A highlight of his time on the CofC team was being part of the winning team at the 2002 ICSA Sloop Championship. Boogie worked in Production Management for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, mastered stained glass and antiqued mirror creation, learned wood turning, excelled in cooking learned from some of his chef friends and restaurant owners, and apprenticed at a Charleston sail loft. He returned to Mobile bringing his many talents and continued in the work he loved. He has recently been involved in several movies filmed locally, production management for symphonic orchestral music ventures around the country, and is cast in the film UNION currently being shown at film festivals in the US. He enjoyed spending time with his nephews and niece, and cooking for family and friends when he wasn’t working on films or pursuing other adventures such as delivering boats and knitting various items for his friends and family. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 10 AM to 12 NOON on April 6, 2019, at Buccaneer Yacht Club, Mobile, AL 36605. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in his memory to the College of Charleston Theater Department’s General Fund at http://theatre.cofc.edu/support/index.php or in support of the Mobile Policeman’s Fund at https://mobilelawenforcementfoundation.com/
