November 7, 1960 - October 18, 2019
Judith (Judy) Elaine Smedley died early Friday morning, October 18, 2019. This came after a week long battle with septic shock caused by complications in her colon. For nearly a week, her children and husband were by her side in the hospital at all times as she fought the infection. Judy was born on November 7, 1960 in Selma, Alabama to her parents, Meralyn Lenz and George Stanley. She is survived by her husband, John Smedley and her three children Jeremy Brannan, Maggie Wood (Ryan Wood) and Jessi Brannan, all raised in Elberta, Alabama where Judy has lived for over fifty years. She is also survived by three stepchildren: Brittany Mareno, Tyler Smedley and Tristan Smedley. She was also blessed to have seven beautiful grandchildren. Judy had a passion for education for over 30 years and earned her master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Alabama. She has always instilled a great love for learning in all those around her and worked as a school teacher for the Baldwin Country Board of Education for 23 years before retiring. She positively impacted hundreds and hundreds of students over the years. She most recently taught Sunday school at Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, where she has been an active member for over 50 years. She was a devout Christian for her entire life and was an active member of her church serving the congregation in many ways and even served as the Treasurer on the Board of Education at St. Mark’s Lutheran School. Judy enjoyed any time spent on her boat, in her pool, relaxing at her cabin on Perdido River or tending to her chickens. She also played a daily role in the lives of her grandchildren and loved them dearly. Services for Judy will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Elberta, Alabama on Tuesday, October 22nd at 10 AM. There will be no wake but a procession to the gravesite at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery will take place immediately following the services at the church.
