Mr. Donald Gibbs Pickering
February 11, 2019
Gibbes Pickering, 41, died unexpectedly February 12 while on a business trip in South Carolina. Pickering is survived by his parents, Cynthia and Ellis Calvert of Orange Beach, AL; a brother Craig W. Pickering of Tuscaloosa, AL and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Joyce and Denton Gibbes of Laurel, MS. Gibbes was born in Hattiesburg, MS, graduated from Foley High School and was employed for almost 20 years in the cellular tower construction and maintenance industry - a profession which took him to great heights across the country. Gibbes battled bipolar depression for most of his adult life – a fight he had pledged to himself and others to win; and in fact had just begun a promising new treatment. He took great solace in returning to Orange Beach, to feel the sand between his toes and the breeze in his face. The place where all was right with the world...that testament found in his countless photos of sunrises, sunsets, an occasional dolphin, a still silhouette of his face toward the sun. A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday, February 23 at the home of his parents in Orange Beach. The sand and the breeze will once more give their warm embrace. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to NAMI Alabama (National Alliance on Mental Illness),1401 I-85 Parkway, Suite A, Montgomery, AL 36106.
