Mrs. Willie Dean Carroll

Dean Roper Carroll (94) passed away peacefully on November 10, 2021. Dean was born on May 26, 1927, in Glencoe, AL, to James T. and Cecile Gray Roper. Dean graduated from Glencoe High School and then attended Auburn University where she originally met her future husband, John. However, after moving back to Gadsden, she met him again, married and had four children. She then spent many years in Vestavia Hills, after which she retired to Gulf Shores in 1992. Dean was actively involved in Gulf Shores United Methodist Church, her circle, her Bible group and both she and John helped to better the community they loved by delivering Meals on Wheels, volunteering to help at area festivals as well as other humble anonymous activities. They were also both involved in many other activities together which including entertaining friends and traveling the world together. Three of Dean’s favorite activities included being president of the Friends of the Library of Gulf Shores several times, being involved in the “Forties Flirts”, and being a member of the Vestavia Hills Literary Club of which she continued to keep up with the original members. Dean was a true Southern lady,famous for her fabulous meals and welcoming spirit for anyone who wanted to join in. She was strong in her faith, enjoyed sharing her knowledge of Biblical truths, and we are all confident that she is with her Lord today. Dean was preceded in death by her parents, James and Cecile Roper, and her husband, John Will Carroll, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Jenifer Carroll Brewer (Fred), Hoover, AL; son, John Will Carroll, Jr. (Susan), Nashville, TN; son, Mark Roper Carroll, Summerdale, AL; son, Timothy Carl Carroll, Gulf Shores, AL; grandson, Raleigh Weston Brewer, Hoover, AL; grandson, John Paul Carroll, Fletcher, NC,; granddaughter, Jessica Fig, New Orleans, LA; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Gail Roper, Gadsden, AL and numerous nieces and nephews and several special cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held in memory of Mrs. Carroll, at 1:00 pm, Thursday, November 18, 2021, at Pine Rest Funeral Home, 16541 US-98, Foley, AL followed by a reception at the church. The family has requested that memorial donations be made in lieu of flowers to the Big Oak Ranch, Business Office, Donations, 250 Jake Mintz Road, Gadsden AL 35905, or The Gulf Shores United Methodist Church Building Repair Fund, 1900 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores AL 36542.
