Mr. William Samuel Chavis

William Samuel Chavis, affectionately known as Bill, peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones on January 2, 2024, at the age of 98 in Foley, AL. Born to Destie and Wesley Chavis on October 27, 1925, in Opp, AL, he led a remarkable life filled with love, dedication, and service. Despite being born into impoverished conditions never finishing his schooling, Bill never held himself back from pursuing success. Bill proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Joining during World War II, he was assigned to the warship, USS Vincennes. His military associations played an integral role in shaping his character and instilling values of loyalty and honor. In 1946, Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Seaman 1st Class. After his military service, Bill embarked on a successful career and built his family. Bill became a skilled electrician retiring as a supervisor with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Beyond his professional achievements, Bill found joy in various hobbies. He had a passion for fishing and shrimping spending countless hours on the water, embracing the tranquility and beauty of nature. Bill also loved dancing. His effortless glide across the dance floor always formed lines of hopeful dance partners. He never missed an opportunity to travel with his family, especially if the destination included a slot machine. Every casino trip completely justifiable, as earnings were leveraged as tithes and offerings on Sunday. Throughout the years, Bill also served as an active leader and deacon for Central Christian Church in Murfreesboro, TN, First Christian Church of Pensacola, and South Baldwin Christian Church. His devotion to his faith was unwavering, and he actively participated in church activities. Bill was always smiling, always welcoming to all visitors, and always cracking jokes. He viewed his role as father and husband an honor he never took for granted. He was warm and wise, and his ability to offer a laugh and a piece of advice simultaneously is an art form that will never be recreated here on Earth. Bill will be deeply missed by his loved ones, including his daughters Carolyn Crawford (Charles) and Sheliah Enderson (Michael), sons Kenneth Chavis and Richard Chavis (Cathy), grandson Stephen Waggoner (Christine), granddaughters Kim Hardwick (Derick), Chrissy Scoggins (Mike), Ashley Chavis (Devin), Courtney Mea (George), and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lela Thomas Chavis, his grandson Wesley D. Chavis, parents Destie and Wesley Chavis, and 4 siblings Lenora May, Walker, James, and Melvin. Bill's presence touched the lives of many, and his memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his country, family, and faith. In honoring Bill's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at Pine Rest Funeral Home to celebrate his remarkable life.
