Mr. Oliver "Ed" E Young Jr.

Oliver E (Ed) Young, Jr., age 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16 at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. Born September 17, 1937, Ed was the only child of Oliver E. (O. E.) Young and Sarah Perry Young of Montgomery. Ed enjoyed many sports and outdoor activities including baseball, softball, hunting, golf, and his favorite…fishing. His father taught him casting at an early age and Ed, even as a child, was an excellent angler. He competed in casting tournaments throughout the south and won many awards. He loved to catch all types of fish, but his favorite was bass. In the 1940’s and 50’s, O.E. and many of his friends from Sears Roebuck in Montgomery would take their families to Lake Jordan, just north of Montgomery for fishing and family vacations. It was always Ed’s favorite lake to fish. He would also get to know the Allen family at Lake Jordan. Lovick, Lee Ella, and their children, one of whom would become Ed’s bride many years later. In 1955, Ed graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery and attended Auburn University that fall. Though he did not graduate from Auburn he became a lifelong fan and supporter. He moved to Gulf Shores in early 1956 to join his parents in running the Young’s by the Sea Motel. He also became reacquainted with his childhood friend, Suanne Allen, who was living at Alabama Point. Later that year, on October 19, 1956, he married Suanne and began a marriage that would last 55 years. In July 1957, Ed joined Baldwin County’s Rural Electric Association. Over his 42-year career, he served as a lineman, crew chief, and staking engineer, and helped build much of the electrical infrastructure throughout Baldwin County. He combined his work career with his love of sports and played baseball and softball for Foley leagues for many years. He coached youth baseball and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with kids of all ages. He played in men’s senior softball leagues until he was 80 years old. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Suanne Allen Young, and his parents O.E. and Sarah Young. He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Guy (Tina) Young of Loudon, TN; Steve (Vicky) Young of Elberta; and Mary Ann (David) Walters of Foley, seven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Ed and Suanne raised their children in the Foley Methodist Church and were members there, and at the Gulf Shores Methodist Church for many years. Throughout his life Ed enjoyed being with family and friends, teaching his children and grandchildren to enjoy the outdoors, play ball, and fish. A graveside service will be held on Thursday morning, August 21, at 10:30, at Pine Rest Memorial Park in Foley. The family wants to thank Ed’s many friends for their support and his caregivers, Mary Nichols, Melissa Williams, and Dianna Wingate for their friendship and loving care.
