Mrs Melba Elaine Hamburg

Melba Elaine Lauder Hamburg died at St. Martin’s in the Pines in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 30, 2023, at the age of 84. Melba was born at home in Foley, Alabama, on March 14, 1939, to Eric and Lizzie Mae Lauder. She is survived by her daughter, Leigh Anne Fleming (Charles); her grandchildren, Ava Elaine Fleming and Charles Jackson Fleming, III; brothers-in-law, Fred Hamburg (Jewel) and Tommy Hamburg (Cheryl); nephews, Bart Hamburg (Marguerite), Todd Hamburg (Don), and Stephen Hamburg; niece, Lisa Bastin (Herb); great-nieces, Kate, Jane, and Emma Bastin, and countless cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of more than 50 years, Floyd Hamburg; her sister, Marsha Lauder DeBakey, and brother-in law, Dr. Ernest G. DeBakey; and brother-in-law, Robert Hamburg, and sister-in-law, Betty Hamburg. Melba attended Foley schools, where she made life-long friends, and graduated from Foley High School in 1957. While at Foley High, she served on the student council, was a cheerleader, in the Glee Club, and was Secretary of her Senior class. Melba and Floyd married in February 1960, and Melba spent the majority of her career working for a local accounting firm, where she made a lasting impact on co-workers and clients alike with her outgoing personality, work ethic, and dependability. Melba was happiest spending time with her friends and family, especially with Floyd in their yard among their roses and camellias, participating in the Camellia Club of Mobile, and traveling throughout the United States after they both retired. In her later years, she enjoyed time with her grandchildren, meeting new people, reading books, and working diligently on Word Search puzzles. Melba was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend to many and will be missed immensely by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church (400 N. Alston Street, Foley, Alabama 36535) on Friday, June 2, 2023, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. After the service, burial will be at Pine Rest Cemetery in Foley. After the burial, a light meal will be provided at St. Paul’s by the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and all are invited to join. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address or to the American Heart Association.
