Mr. J Hall Schenck Jr

J Hall Schenck Jr. passed away on July 25th at Baldwin Health, surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his father, J Hall Schenck Sr., mother Jane Kelly Schenck, sister Susan Strickland, and brother Peter Schenck. He is survived by his wife, Valerie May Schenck; daughter, Kelly Schenck; son, J Hall Schenck I l l (Sally); brother, Michael Swick (Jamye); and niece, Elizabeth Hall Mann (Gabrielle). J was born on October 10, 1951, in Auburn, New York, and raised in Perry, Georgia, where he graduated from Perry High School. He attended Auburn University, where he earned a degree in business, was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He later earned a master's degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Florida State University. J met Valerie in Lakeland, Florida, in 1976 while working at the Bath and Racquet Club. They married in 1979. In 1986, they moved with their daughter to Orange Beach, where their son was born in 1988. The move was driven by J' s desire to become a restaurant owner. Through fellow fraternity brother Robert Grant, he met future business partner Richard Schwartz. Their long and productive partnership helped shape the future of a growing beach town on the verge of national recognition. Over the course of 30 years, they owned and operated 12 restaurant venues with diverse menus and a catering business. In 1995, they were featured in Bon Appétit magazine's "Best of the South." J ' s impact on his family, friends, and the Orange Beach community is immeasurable. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Ducks Unlimited, coached Little League baseball, and hosted countless movie nights. He was a passionate Auburn supporter and an honorary member of the Men's Basketball Letterman's Club. He took great pride in organizing tailgate gatherings at home and at Auburn football games. However, his greatest joy was loving, guiding, and supporting his children. In true J fashion, a casual, come-and-go celebration of life will be held at the Schenck residence on October 18, 2025, from 4:00 —7:30 PM.
